Location and Hours vary
So, Wednesday was surprisingly cold in NYC. What did I decide to do to welcome the weather? I got myself a good ol' cup of ice cream. I tracked the Big Gay Ice Cream Truck down through it's Twitter updates and headed over to Union Square West and 17th St. At first it wasn't easy to differentiate the BGICT from any other Mr. Softee truck. It looks the same! But as I slowly approached it, the BIG Big Gay Ice Cream Truck sign caught my eye. I ran over to it like the good old days of my childhood ice cream truck chases. There were so many choices and it was hard to make a decision on what to order. There were there basic ice cream flavors (vanilla, chocolate, and twist - duh!) and a plethora of toppings. After a long moment I finally decided on the vanilla ice cream with Olive Oil and Sea Salt (and Pine Nuts).
The vanilla ice cream was topped with drizzles of olive oil, sprinkles of sea salt, and pellets of toasted pine nuts. The ice cream itself was light, fluffy, and airy, but rich at the same time - not the kind you get from an everyday ice cream truck. The olive oil gave the ice cream a savory, rich kick. The salt surprising contrasted with the sweetness of the ice cream perfectly and the pine nuts added a nice crunch. The olive oil and salt with the pine nuts made the ice cream a mind blowing experience. It was rich, smooth, savory, sweet, and perfectly portioned. I hate it when I get ice cream with toppings that aren't proportional, either ending up with too much topping (the flavor of my ice cream drowning in and over-powered by the toppings) or not enough (halfway through the ice cream, realizing that all the topping is gone). I'm definitely tracking down the BGICT again to sample some other toppings! -9/30/09

ReplyDeleteunfortunately (or fortunately, for my ballooning waistline), the BGICT's season ended this past weekend... they'll be back in the spring.
