Location and Hours Vary
There's just something about mobile food vendor trucks that really appeal to me. It's just fun and raw - makes you feel like a real hardcore New Yorker. What's even better is getting fancy desserts from a truck!
The Dessert Truck is one of the more inventive dessert/sweets trucks around. It offers fancy desserts with pretty unexpected ingredients. I've had their Warm Chocolate Bread Pudding, Warm Molten Dark Chocolate Cake, Pavlova, Goat Cheese Cake, and Hot Chocolate. Obviously not all in shot! The Warm Chocolate Bread Pudding is apparently one of their signature desserts featured as a winner on Food Network's Throwdown. So, I had to give it a try. Surprisingly, it was pleasantly not as sweet or chocolatey as I had expected. It was warm and soft, drenched in a bacon custard sauce. The Warm Molten Dark Chocolate Cake was warm and oozed creamy filling from its olive oil and chocolate center . The cake itself was rich and sweet. The textures of the cake and filling contrasted perfectly with the crunch of the pistachios and saltiness of the sea salt that topped the cake. However, some may find the chocolate center to be a little too sweet. Their Hot Chocolate was even sweeter. It was extremely rich and creamy, but so sweet that it was hard to finish the whole thing. You'd probably suffer a huge sugar rush followed by an equally intense crash after tossing back one of those. Out of all the desserts my least favorite was the Pavlova. It's a different take on the classic Pavlova. Dessert Truck's version had the basics - meringue, creme fraiche, and fruit (in gelee form). The meringue didn't taste any more unique than ones I've had before and the gelee had a weird kind of meaty taste to it (I'll be nice and blame the weird taste on the cold I had at the time).
My favorite treat at the Dessert Truck was the Goat Cheese Cake. I know what you're thinking... is this girl serious? It was actually very delicious and savory. The goat cheese cake texture itself was smooth and creamy like a cheesecake, with a kick of goat cheese flavor without the saltiness. It sat in a thin pool of rosemary caramel and was topped with some fresh blackberries. The rosemary caramel sauce bathed the cheese cake with just enough sweetness to balance out the strong flavor of the goat cheese. However, one recommendation I would have for the Dessert Truck is to crank up the temperature of the contraption they keep the cheese cake in. One of the 3 times I got the goat cheese cake, its center was semi-frozen, which made the experience kind of a bummer. I had to scrape at the soft outside cheese cake layer until I got to where it was semi-frozen, try to warm the container with my hands until part of the outside thawed, scrape some more, thaw, etc. However, the two other times I had it, it was simply delicious. -2009
